We have now received our pack to start the process for getting our next motability car. Actually, it confused me a bit (I know it doesn't take much) as there was no reference to the fact that we are already in the scheme and just seem to have been done as if for a new customer). Anyway, I am so shocked as to have high some of the advanced payments have gone now and we currently have a Renault Grand Scenic which is great for putting the mobility scooter in but we are going to have to rethink as there is no way we can fork out the advanced payment for a similar spec one. There is so much information and different makes and models it is completely confusing so I just wondered if anyone already has a motability car can give me any recommendations. I dont want a small car but dont particularly what a huge one either. I really need an automatic parking brake rather than a handbrake and an automatic rather than a manual. Keyless entry would be an advantage as well as approaching a car with crutches, handbag etc it is then hard to balance and get a key out of your handbag to enter the car. And I dont want a silver car So any recommendations please would be appreciated because at the moment it looks like a huge mountain to climb to get the new car and I don't have a great deal of energy or stamina to trail around hundreds of different dealerships. Thank you :) Mary xx

I looked at Renault Grand Scenic last year, Sept. 08, but by the time I came to order my car the deposits were out of my budget. I opted for a Citroen C4 Grand Picasso instead. Its the 1.6 VTR+, auto, electric handbrake, keyless entry etc. Plenty of room for crutches. I paid about £995 deposit. Carol

We alway go for Mazdas, Mary, but the 5 automatic etc is now about £3500 deposit which is a heck of a lot to my way of thinking. Good luck with it all - it's a bit daunting nowadays.

We're really pleased with our Skoda Octavia, but it doesn't have the automatic parking brake or the keyless opening. We were able to put the money upfront when we got it because Jeff had just retired and had his lump sum, but we won't be it next time Anthea x

Hi Mary,
I am pleased you have begun this thread as we think the motobility scheme is anti-large families! LOL
We were stunned and so upset when we went and had a good look around for a 7 seater (we have an 8 seater so the cars we saw were small by comparison) and were told we'd have to put down a 7k deposit! We were SO shocked, when Mark asked 'but surely this is a one off payment?' and they told us we would have to find 7K EVERY three years! We left as soon as we could...... Of course I would also loose my whole disability allowance too (well the mobility part)...
I am convinced that rarely anyone will go for a 7 seater!
Much love, and good luck with it all!
Amanda

To be fair though Amanda, if you bought a new car worth £25K you're likely to lose £15K+ over the first 3 years and you'd have to pay for insurance and maintenance etc. A friend is someone who knows all about you but loves you anyway!

I have vague recollections of reading in the last Motability magazine that they now have a second hand scheme for people who require large vehicles. Anyone else read this? Carol

I was reluctant at first, remembering the older clunky diesels and dodgey quality plastic interiors of the 1990s but they are a dream now. I have a diesel for economics. It is confortable and can fit 4 adults and 2 teens and an infant seat it in with ease. The rear extra seats fold flat and unlike the vauxhall equivalent there are no enormous wheel arches taking up all the boot space. I keep a wheelchair, a buggy and a travel cot in the boot at all times and there is loads of extra room. My assistance dog used to happily go in there too.
Will be looking to get a new one Next sept, unless things change dramatically. The only other one I am considering is the Kia because of getting my power chair in.
I have been so pleased with it.

When I had my helper dog, I did my training with a girl who works for a disability magazine.
She says the system will not change until it is set up with the disabled person to be the driver, the vast majority (a really high percentage- cant recall exactly how many she said but I was shocked) are driven by people who are not disabled but are designated drivers.
I have been looking at getting one that is large enough to have the family and my power chair and you are looking at £25k really.
In 2010 I am going to have a look at accessible cars (mobility roadshow in Birmingham) for the powerchair and start the process of applying for a grant and see how far we get. I think you have to apply early for these things, the roadshow is in Spring so I hope this is enough time.
Also, you can opt to fund certain cars over 5 yrs if you have had to save a lot.

We have a Ford Focus estate( in blue as I didn't want silver) and the mobility scooter fits in easily, in fact we can get suitcases in as well. We had to put down £500 advance payment.

Dear Stewart,
For us to buy a second hand VW Caravelle (what we have currently) would be around 20K....
A seven seater say, Renault Espace, is 7K every three years and they are 25K new...I just would not be able to afford the 7k every three years even though the perks are very tempting.
From what I could see they don't offer VW Caravelle's..maybe I should have another look..
Love,
Amanda

Dearest Amanda, Have you looked at a Hyundai i800. It's an 8 seater. I'm pretty sure you can buy them brand new for £20K. It will have a 5 year warranty on it as well! It actually gets good reviews for what it is! Stewart. A friend is someone who knows all about you but loves you anyway!

Hi Amanda
Just a few of the low deposit 5 seaters you could possibly consider, together with deposits. The VW Turan is not too bad and quite decent inside.

Thank Jean! but the seven seaters we saw were so tiny we would be silly to swap our bus for them!
If you do hear of any 8 seaters which are quite reasonable that would be FAB!
Much love, A
